American Dream?

Allcom - Backbone,

Can someone confirm for me that next years theme being American Dream is not a joke? On the surface it appears to go against everything that Burningman means to me. Isn't the "American Dream" all about capitalism and making money? Maybe I am reading this wrong, but I just don't get it right now. Thanks!

    The term "American Dream" was first used by James Truslow Adams in his book The Epic of America which was written in 1931. He states:

    "The American Dream is "that dream of a land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement. It is a difficult dream for the European upper classes to interpret adequately, and too many of us ourselves have grown weary and mistrustful of it. It is not a dream of motor cars and high wages merely, but a dream of social order in which each man and each woman shall be able to attain to the fullest stature of which they are innately capable, and be recognized by others for what they are, regardless of the fortuitous circumstances of birth or position."

    sounds fairly burning man to me.

      Thank you for this. I still don't feel quite right about it though.

      The thing that initially drew me to Burningman is how community centric it is, and not about the individual. The American dream as Mr. Adams describes it seems to be more about the individual.

      Also, the words "social order" are a little off. It seems like "social disorder" might be more accurate to describe BM :)

    The new theme is ripe for many various intrepretations. For some, it is about the acrual of things, for others, it is an ephemeral joke that can not be quantified. What will the American Dream be to those from outside the US? Go beyond the initial reaction about this theme, there is plenty of depth here.

      I agree there is a lot of depth to the theme and it should be at the very least interesting seeing how people run with it,

      Though i just cant help but feel a little alienated by the theme, Regardless of what the American dream really means, it is still American centric and that's a cultural experience I can only relate to as an outsider looking in.

      I don't like the feeling of being an outsider especially within a community i have come to love. I become disconnected with only my external views to relate to theme rather than being able to connect with the theme on an equal level to every participant.

      But at the end of the day it is only a theme, the community of people that make up the event are just the same.

      So that said there is only one solution. We shall do away with the American Dream, The Commonwealth will return in force this year to reassert its sovereign right, so we can all live in peace, love and a class based society under Her Majesty the Queen of England's rule, one big happy family once more.

        Thanks. I think you touch on the thing that I think bothers me the most about the theme. It alienates my friends from outside the US. Some of my favorite people I have met at the burn are from Australia and Japan.

        Another concern I have with it is the type of people it might tend attract. I worry that it will attract that are pro American to the point of being anti non-american. I personally have world centric views, and hate to think of this festival as being just pro American. I do get that other flags will be up, but that is overshadowed by the name and flag in the main picture. One of the things that really draws me to get involved with BM is the internationality of it. In my opinion, the more that people from around the world can get together and get to know each other, the better the world becomes.

        In the end you are dead on with the fact it's just a theme. I am still concerned but you are so right, the community and the people are still amazing and that is what makes Burningman what it is.
