Re: first year rangering
Wed, September 5, 2007 - 8:02 AMGiven that I wasn't totally certain I'd be accepted, I had loosely planned my week with other activities. This meant I couldn't have dedicated as much time to Rangering as I would have liked to. Next year though: more shifts for me. -

Re: first year rangering
Wed, September 5, 2007 - 10:37 AMme too. Nicole was not too happy about it, but it all worked out. -

Sat, September 8, 2007 - 11:58 PMFrom a victim of the ranger widow syndrome I say, always remember you didn't come with her to the burn to ignore her. Make time to share the experience with her primarily and peace shall be your reward.

Re: first year rangering
Wed, September 5, 2007 - 12:04 PMBwah ha ha hawwwww! we got you!
one thing i did was schedule shifts at teh begining and toward the end of the event so i had prime time play but was able to fill into lightly attended shifts.
i'm really glad you like Rangering. It really is a blast isn't it? I'm doubly glad becasue we were light on most of our shifts this year. not to the point of alarm, but enough to make me REALLY glad you like it.
One thing that would help is if you would think of what things we could do to make it more attractive to do Ranger shifts, especially in prime times. i mean things that would motivate us to come in, sign in, and walk with a partner under Khaki management rather than free-ranging. what do you all think?
since you are now on Allcomm, please send your thoughts there rather than here. it will get the right attention of senior staff and it allows us to discuss things that would be goofy looking on a public list too.
Personally i like Rangering so much that i do it at most of our regional events in Seattle, Portland and Vancouver (BC). i even run Ranger-style "security" for private events sometimes too, where we can work very closely with the bouncers. more on that some other time.
ciao!

Sat, September 15, 2007 - 5:09 PMUH OH IS RIGHT !
Hand over the radio and no one gets hurt ..well that's not very rangerly of me so...
There is no one on the other end of the radio now and your battery is probably about to die if not already dead!
So why don't you let me take it out and get cleaned for you!

Chocolate bacon? Catch and release childrens program? Why the color taupe is far better than off white or egg shell in regards to Ranger hats? The Agent 9 memorial plaque? -

What would motivate me to work a shift in prime time??
How about a guaranteed actual meal at the end of a primetime shift? I don't expect violins for this next 'sharing of experience' and I'm totally cool with how it all played out, but it was a little disappointing to sign off for the evening after doing 2 burn perimeters, with the second (Crude Awakening) being a clusterfuck even for the more experienced rangers, and being told, 'all meal pogs are gone. sorry.' and being a little generous with it. -
-
Re: first year rangering
Wed, September 5, 2007 - 8:10 PMI wish I had known this, as I had some extra pogs. I do know what you mean by the double-header that evening. I missed out on a date because of it, but valued the experience that I received because of it. -

Sat, September 15, 2007 - 5:12 PMOH, man ... FLINT !
HAND OVER THE POGS TOO ! With the radio!

Re: first year rangering
Sat, September 8, 2007 - 10:01 PMCopy that on the clusterfuck Saturday. It was, at least, like the old days of Burning Man, perimeters on the fly, full of danger, and a testament to the abilities of Rangers to be able to roll with it. It is easier when things happen according to plan, but then eveyone complains that it's not spontaneous enough... I wish that I could have provided meals for everyone Saturday, there was going to be a catering truck for hungry Rangers afterward, which fell through, like many other things that we're planned. This *did* happen before the Temple Burn Sunday at least, which was picture perfect. We also got the cones we wanted Sunday... and violins...
The pog thing is just stupid, hopefully that will be worked out by next year...
Thanks for stepping up and helping out, as far as the rest of BRC knows, everything went according to plan, and they had a safe kick ass time.

When it comes to cooking on the playa, I am LAY-ZEEEEE. Too much of a hassle and mess... Hence, I tend to subsist for the entire week on a modest and slightly bizarre diet of beef jerky, bags of tuna or salmon, dried fruit, nuts, Red Vines and, of course, Power Goo for energy on the inner playa bike runs :-)
So all of that is to say that that food before the temple burn was FROM HEAVEN. Thanks for being the angel who made it possible...
Apropos to the discussions we're having elsewhere, clearly good, already prepared and freely provided food is the fastest way to boost THIS Ranger's volunteer spirit... :-)

Re: first year rangering
Sun, September 9, 2007 - 10:55 AMthis years alpha class totally rocked my world. and did the same to the rest of the cadre and the mentors :)
we made passing mentoring tougher this year and expected to have a lot more bonks. ya'll blew that plan totally out of the water.
watching the alphas from this year, and last year's second years, step up and handle a city of 40,000 plus with 6 or 8 rangers on shift was amazing. you handled everything out there and did it with style and grace and humor and in the most rangerly way.
there is a lot going on on allcom right now and a lot going on behind the scenes. the purpose of all of it is to make it better for you. for all the dirt rangers. it will be better next year. we want you back and need you back AND want your input. if there is anything you would like to see changed or done differently don't hesitate at all to post on allcom or contact me or any of your mentors. we are listening...

Mon, September 10, 2007 - 10:15 AMSuperDave is most awesomely excellent. He wouldn't flaunt it, but he more than lives up to his name. I wasn't there for that particular bounty, but was on the receiving end of other generosities.

Wed, September 5, 2007 - 4:28 PMTomcat, it showed. Both Vegas and I were amazed at how well you took to it and how much of an impact you made even in your limited first-year shifts. You're going to be spectacular next year. Looking forward to it already.

Re: first year rangering
Wed, September 5, 2007 - 8:17 PMI, too, had a great first year rangering and will definitely be back for more next year... Now if only the Rangers could lift that pesky cover-your-bits dress code rule.... oh well, guess I'll settle for making a khaki bikini instead.
Thanks to all who helped make this burn special, but especially thanks to Longshot for the wonderful support (and goggles), to Answergirl and Ronin for being amazing mentors, to daMongolian for the coat and kindness, to Atreyu for helping me find some really bad advice near the Deep End, to Umbra for the longest, best hug of my life, to Grosfaz (sp?) for helping me bike down wayward vehicles by the airport, to Dirty and Tao Skye for being strong women and amazing leaders during perimeter burns, to Splinter for training me and inspiring me, and to Jeeves, for getting me into this mess in the first place. You're all rockstars and I can't wait to meet more of you next year.... -

Re: first year rangering
Sun, September 9, 2007 - 12:06 AMSpeaking of first years that just plain took off and rocked the job, I gotta mention Iron Max of my very own camp, Thermal Shock at Berlin.
From Boolane picking him up in his cargo van when he sighted him at dawn halfway between Wadsworth and Empire peddling a mountain bike with a child's trailer filled with water and flying the Australian flag tied to the seat post on the before Sunday last year to listening to him on the Radio doing the rockstar Ranger dance. He's been very impressive.
A great new crop this year and just in time but we need MORE.
Good on Iron Max though : ).
Sas
I'd suggested the name Iron Mac as his playa name for the over the top biking to BM thing and he changed it a bit for his ranger handle. I'm honored. -

Re: first year rangering
Mon, September 10, 2007 - 10:21 AMA small gripe: shifts worked entered into the database. Or not. Every time I signed out for my shift, it was indicated that I never signed in. I would arrive half an hour before my shift to sign into the system, but for what ever reasons, it never indicated I was there. -

the computer had a hairball. It kept spitting things out.
I am hoping the HQ worker entered your name in the log book with your times. I don't remember any of them having a hairballs ... no play on those words! not one!
Did you give an update of your hours to Tusla a couple days ago?

Re: first year rangering
Sun, September 16, 2007 - 12:58 PMEverything was updated just fine; thanks for responding about this. I'm not sure what you folks did before this, but for the most part, things worked really easy checking in/out and seeing my hours worked. So a big thanks to whom ever created it and those who worked with it.
