Mon, April 20, 2009 - 7:04 AMPer Splinter, Alpha ranger Castro actually got to be ranger Wah Wah the Clown until later that same day when an incident involving a knife made his one of the shortest tenures in ranger history.

Re: Caleb Schaber aka Shooter
Tue, April 21, 2009 - 9:40 PMYes, definitely sad. I'm kind of pissed at him for waiting for his girlfriend to come back in from smoking before he pulled the trigger (in addition to doing it at all). I just don't know why an audience is so important to some folks that do this to themselves. Now she has to carry that around inside.

Re: Caleb Schaber aka Shooter
Wed, April 22, 2009 - 10:04 AMsadly, yes.
he was hanging out with two guys, one who was "touching" him, he got pissed, a yelling match ensued, the other guy tried to kick his knee out, so he pulled a knife on the guy, i don't remember who stopped it, but LE went looking for him, then he went awol for the rest of burningman....
i think the other dude did not press charges, so it all got dropped or something.
did he really wait to do it in front of his girlfriend?
typical.... -

Re: Caleb Schaber aka Shooter
Thu, April 23, 2009 - 3:44 PMGirlfriend may have been a bad description. He'd met her traveling and she came back to Gerlach with him and they were together after the parties that night. She stepped out for a cigarette and when she came back in Shooter was standing there with two shells and a shotgun. He loaded one and killed himself in front of her. I gather she was the source for this account which came down to us on Allcom.

I wonder about the second shell... -

Fri, April 24, 2009 - 8:01 PMHell son, is that ALL?
I miss the rangers that had little use for corporate speak and multi-tiered training and a "cadre" for every god damned thing.
We're either going to be the Masons or Wackenhutt, real soon.
Mark my words, sensitivety training and non-disclosure forms for dirt rangers is coming soon.
Another ranger wrote me earlier today that "This is a slow shift over to the greater Disneyfication of the event, one step at a time, which the org has embraced as The Way To Be (tm)."
That explains everything.

Re: Caleb Schaber aka Shooter
Mon, April 27, 2009 - 7:16 AMI went back to Ohio but my city was gone. There was no train station, there was no downtown.
South Howard had disappeared, all my favorite places.
My city had been pulled down, reduced to parking spaces.
Hey, ho, where’d you go, Ohio?
That being said, what did this happen, boy am I out of the loop? when did this happen. -

This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Re: Caleb Schaber aka Shooter
Mon, April 27, 2009 - 8:43 PMI'll just say this...
It used to be that any given ranger could be called on to handle most any kind of call. It made rangering fun and an adventure unparalleled. You never knew what you'd confront but you grew with each successful resolution.
Nowadays, a dirt ranger spends most their shifts answering noise calls. You have to be in one of the other, trained, departments to be called to an altered participant or to patrol the inner playa (for instance) and once trained, that's mostly what you do from then on.
I figure the giant crop of alphas from this past year will start shedding this year because it's pretty boring to patrol now as a simple dirt ranger and we all can't be one of the proliferating cadres, or even want to be.
I suspect I'd have already bailed on rangering if I didn't base out of Berlin where all manner of calls come direct to me withoug being screened by the current crop of Khakis (who now have their own "Cadre" forming). Patrols are still pretty vanilla though.
Four or so years ago a ranger joined who makes their living as a corporate trainer and they've enjoyed a meteoric rise in the org since then. That's when this silliness really took hold and it grows more stultifying with each year with the traditional ranger task sliced into ever finer job descriptions complete with matching training protocols, cadres and rites. I personally like the person in question but I'm not in love with their effect on the organization.
Feh.
