Greetings from Gerlach!

The event is looming and things are gearing up around here. DPW's Tony "Coyote" Perez is testing out his new transit for the City survey. The sign shop is in production mode, the Man is built and in His box, and the Man base and Cafe construction crews are in pre-production. The Green Man burn is almost upon us, and the excitement is so tangible it has texture and flavor-- kind of malty, with a whiff of hops, smooth and delicious!

You all should be aware of a unique opportunity to "Green your Burn" during the event this year. The Friends of Black Rock High Rock along with the Earth Guardians is planning to conduct a volunteer restoration effort on Wednesday, August 29 and Thursday, August 30, at the Coyote Spring dunes just east of Black Rock City along the edge of the playa. This will be the first time that volunteers coming directly from the event will work on a project from the BLM's own resource management plan, and it is an important next step in developing more meaningful partnerships to protect the long term health of the Black Rock Desert.

The Coyote Spring dunes actually are spring fed, but the flow has diminished somewhat since the development of the "Frog Pond" springs. The dunes have been further impacted by illegal off-highway vehicle (OHV) use-- people are jumping them with their ATVs and motorcycles. This is causing ugly erosion and further threatening the viability of the springs there. These dunes help to support kit foxes, birds, lizards, and other fauna and flora-- and are situated adjacent to the historic Nobles Route of the California-Oregon Emigrant Trails.

What we are planning to do is to make an example of these particularly sensitive dunes to educate OHV users about appropriate behavior in the National Conservation Area (NCA). We will build a fence (or segments of fence) to prohibit traffic from impacting the dunes, erect signs informing visitors of the reasons these impacts are inappropriate, remove and camouflage the damage that already exists, and collect native seed where possible to germinate for future replanting efforts. The desired outcome is not only to arrest and repair the damage at these dunes, but to educate people to avoid damage spreading to other sensitive areas of the desert.

I hope you will join us on Wednesday, August 29, at 8 AM at the Earth Guardians in Center Camp. We will transport everyone to and from the site, and will provide lunch on Wednesday. We will do two shifts on Wednesday, but on Thursday we plan to do a shorter shift of just a few hours. Everyone who participates in the event will get a special T-shirt! Woohoo! Andy Baker of Earth Guardians is also planning some nature hikes and an invasive plant removal project at Cassidy Mine-- here's the schedule:

Tuesday: 8 AM – 1 PM: Nature Walk to Coyote Springs & Frog Pond
3 PM – 5 PM: Environmental Stewardship Meeting
Wednesday: 8 AM – 5 PM: All-day restoration work trip & field trip
Thursday: 8 AM – 1 PM: Restoration work at Coyote Springs
3 PM – 5 PM: Environmental Stewardship Meeting
Friday: 8 AM – 2 PM: Restoration work at Cassidy Mine
3 PM – 7 PM: Nature Walk to Coyote Springs & Frog Pond

If anyone is interested in volunteering and needs more information, please contact me at metric (at) blackrockdesert (dot) org or call (775) 557-2900. This project is open to the public, so there should be an interesting mix of people in attendance. I hope to see you there!

check out the specs below:

http://www.flipo.com/products_list.aspx?Subcategory=Solar+LED+Strands

It will be the 102 LED strands that will be available, in WHITE (clear), BLUE, and RED+GREEN (red and green alternating colors... definitely more Christmasy, but also good for illuminating an area while not killing your nightvision). These 50ft strands stay illuminated 10-16hrs at night, with a light-senstitive auto-on/off feature.

Ignore the retail price listed on the webpage!! Your price will be $50/set (a savings of $10/set, plus you're not paying for shipping! Non-solar, ie plug-in, 100 LED light string sets retailed for about $50-60 this past Christmas, just as a price comparison). If you order more than 2 sets, I can work out a better deal for you- chat me up about your ideas!!

I will also have available, 60-LED solar string sets, which illiminate 8-10 hours, same auto on/off feature, in the following colors: WHITE, BLUE, RED, GREEN. These strings are 37ft long, with LEDS every 6inches. Your price on these are $40 (or lower if you buy a few sets!!).

SOLAR LANTERNS
http://www.flipo.com/products_list.aspx?Subcategory=Solar+Lanterns

Light-sensitive auto on/off. Each lantern has multiple functions allowing the lantern to imitate the look of a kerosene lantern or act as a bright area light. Weather and water resistant, each lantern requires no additional wiring and includes a Sheppard's hook for permanent ground placement, or carry handle for hanging wherever.
Copper or black finish, $16 each.

OTHER BLINKY GOODIES, at near-wholesale prices:

FLAMELESS LED candles- great candle lighting effects, without the danger of open flame!

Flickering LED blow/clap on/off 4, 5, 6 inch "pillar" wax candles:
$10, $11, $12 each respectively

Flickering LED tea-lights- in yellow, blue, green, or red color.
run off a single replaceable CR2032 or 2016 battery, run time 15-20hrs. $2 each, or lower if you get several...

Head lamps!!
dual brightness white LEDs, also with a RED LED that can be set in solid or blinky mode for visibility- super cheap at $8!!!

super bright 9 LED mini flashlights
el wire lit glasses
color shifting keychain pens
scrolling LED belt buckles- red, blue, white or pink
magnetic scrolling LED badges- great for bikes, clothes, Ranger wear!
color shifting LED rose quartz pendants- assorted shapes
color shifting and flashing jewelry- great for gifties!
clip-on or magnetic blinky lights
blinky belly rings
blinky toe or adjustable rings, with shapes
29in colored LED flash tube necklaces - great for bikes /wheels!!
BLACKLIGHT LED HEAD LAMPS!!
flashing design hair clips, and bracelets
PET BLINKERS
mesmerizing LED fans

replacement batteries- CR927, CR2032, CR2016, AG3 in cards of 5, 6 or 12 batteries (or individually, as you need) for really cheap- a *fraction* of the price compared to Radio Shack!!

GLOW POI!!
various kinds and prices... but purchase a set of super-cool, made-by-me Ogg poi, and get a free hour lesson (sorry, applies to Front Range folks only!!) to get you on your way to poi spinning fabulousness!!

bean bag practice poi, blacklight or non-blacklight reactive :-)

Chat me up about your blinky and light ideas, needs, or fantasies, and we'll get the ball rolling on making it all happen!!

  Greetings my Ranger bretheren.

This weekend, June 8-10, there is a South Bay Regional Pre-compression and we're looking for a few good kilts. If anyone isn't going to Flambe Lounge (or want's to got to both), we could really use a couple of khaki clad hero's to help the party run smoothly. This would probably be a very low key gathering so I don't envision the need for formal shifts. Just a few of us sporting the virtually universal go-to emblem so that folks know that there are people to go to in the event of a problem. All you'll need to do is wander around and be the gorgeous, caring spirits that you always are.

Info on the South Bay Regional Precompression can be found at the bottom of this post.

Unfortunitely due to the small size of the gathering, we're not able to provide comp tickets for volunteers. So if you're already planning to attend or just want to dust off not only your Rangering skills, but your playa gear as well, this would be a perfect opportunity to do so.

Also, if anyone happens to have a couple of FRS radios we could utilize, that would rock.

As of this moment, since noone else grabbed the torch and ran, I'm coordinating the Ranger presence. If anyone else would like to step up to plate and run it instead, please feel free. This is a do-ocracy after all. If anyone believes that there needs to be a more formalized Ranger presence, hey... step right up and hit it outta the park.

---
rodent (putting the eek in geek)

(for info see below or go to www.lupinlodge.org )>>>>>>>>>

Whether you've been to Burning Man since 1991, or want to go for the first time this year, come join local burners at Lupin for this THREE DAY 2007 PRECOMPRESSION WEEKEND! Gear up for the playa, do some practice camping (shake the dust out of your tent, test your air mattress, see how warm your playa coat really is!), PARTICIPATE in the creation of a playa-rific experience for everyone who attends. Want to DJ? Practice your FIRE SPINNING performance? Have a new ART project or EL WIRE creation you'd like to show off? Tune in to the 2007 Burning Man "GREEN MAN" theme with new ideas for GIFTING, INTERACTIVE ART, and RADICAL SELF-EXPRESSION! Come to give to your community and be delighted by your fellow aprticipants! Workshops are planned -including instruction on the latest techniques for building evaporation ponds, solar powered campsites, wind powered campsites, massage workshops and exchange, drumming and more.

Burning Man Principles: As a Burning Man Regional event, this gathering is for the entire community and participants are encouraged to embrace the 10 Principles of Burning Man:

Radical Inclusion Communal Effort

Gifting Civic Responsibility

Decommodification Leave No Trace

Radical Self-Reliance Participation

Radical Self-Expression Immediacy

Registration: As a family naturist retreat, Lupin Lodge has certain restrictions and all attendees will be required to register at the gate before admission to the campground (see Lupin Agreements for information).

Please RSVP to realgirl at southbayburners.org so we can get a headcount prior to the event. Camping fees are collected at the gate to cover expenses for Lupin Lodge. In the interest of keeping admission prices low, the Regional will not be using this event as a fundraiser. No vending is permitted inside.

Weekend fees (per person):

9am Friday – 8pm Sunday (3 days, 2 nights) $75

9am Saturday – 8pm Sunday (2 days, 1 night) $65

All day Sunday, beginning at 9am – 8pm $30

Above rates are for "dry camping" only, RV hookups are an additional $15 per day. There are 17 RV sites and over 100 tent sites available on a first-come, first-served basis. In addition, 7 Yurts and a large cabin are available for rental.

Facilities: Lupin offers a swimming pool, 2 hot tubs, a sauna, showers and other recreational amenities including free Wi-Fi. (Bathing suits are prohibited in the pool and hot tubs.) There are restrooms near the pool and the clubhouse; additional porta-potties will be provided based on expected attendance.

Meals: The Lupin Clubhouse Restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as beer, wine, juices, espressos and a variety of snacks. Although you may prepare your own meals, they will be preparing buffet-style meals over the weekend as well (vegan options will be available at all the buffets).

Friday night, 6pm-9pm – Pasta dinner $10

Saturday night, 5pm-8pm – BBQ $12

Sunday morning, 8am-11am – Breakfast buffet $ 7

A community kitchen is also available with a stove, microwave, coffeemaker, sink etc. (please leave no trace!) Because of high fire danger in the mountains, no open flames or camp stoves may be used for cooking at tent sites. Cooking in enclosed RVs or vans, or use of the communal BBQ grills is permitted.

Music: A DJ booth (with electricity provided) will be set up near the clubhouse lawn, spinning house, break beats, techno and a variety of burner-friendly music 24x7 for the duration of our event (Friday through Sunday evening). Although there will be no shutoff time for the music, we will need to adhere to legal decibel limits. If you would like to take a DJ shift, please contact our DJ coordinator, Big Mike, or join the regional discussion group.

Fire: Fire performers are encouraged to bring your poi and spin to the music! We will have a designated fuel depot, spin-out procedures, and assigned fire safeties with fire extinguishers in order to ensure fire is contained at all times. If you want to spin, please talk to peaceblossom to review safety procedures.

Art: We will have various EL-wire art installations near the clubhouse and camping areas, and you are welcome to bring more! To pre-register your art and discuss placement, email to peaceblossom at sbcglobal.net. There will also be slideshows and short DVDs playing in the NuDome Yurt throughout the weekend.

Participate: We welcome volunteers to ensure our PreCom is successful. If you have experience working Gate, Greeters, Rangers, Registration, Playa Info, Artery etc. then plug in locally and bring your experience to this event! If you would like to be a volunteer, email to realgirl at southbayburners.com with the subject line: PARTICIPATE.

I got my first taste of rangering this year at Interfuse this year and found my niche, really love helping people work out issues and being there at just the right time when one happens, fits my flow great and enjoy it. Would love to do it on the playa and learn some great techniques to bring home to help train next years Interrangers (Interfuse Rangers), as well as being better able to serve my community.

I am not 100% going to BM this year, but have gone from No Way -> It would be nice maybe -> I think I would like to go -> I really want to go -> How can I make it happen this year. So, you can see where this may lead :D

Also, from reading the site it is my understanding that Alpha Rangers can be trained on playa if they are not west coast? (I live in Iowa).
My name is Holly (AKA Bewitched) and I filled out the Ranger volunteer form a cople of months ago. I haven't heard anything back yet, but since it's only January, I'm not too concerned.
2007 will be my 7th burn and although I've been part of the fire conclave convergence ( fire spinner) camp for many years, I'm looking for a new gig and way to participate this year. I'm also close friends with Ranger Teksage and Ranger Gemini who have been nice enough to help me out in this process.
OK....a few quick questions.....

When would I expect to hear from the Rangers?
I've heard about a training session on the black rock in July, does this still happen, if so when?

I plan on arriving on the playa Saturday morning to make it to the Sunday on-playa ranger training. I took a year off rangering and have been off the email list.

Does anyone know what I should do at the gate? I couldn't find anything about rangers getting on an early arrival list, and in the past I've just driven up on saturday with no problem. Will it be the same this year?
from night’s cold wind and chaos,

better to survive incipient chaos,
oncoming day. The sun, already flinging fire
upon the tents and shoulders of order,
I catch still more feathers on the warming Playa,

I was an Alpha this year and it seemed to me that I could have done a lot more Rangering had the shifts been 6 or 4 hours long vs. 8. I found that on Saturday and Sunday night (during the burns) that I was able to Ranger, and still have time for my camp and other activities.

I was also curious if any thoughts or attempts had been made at having a few "floating" or "pick-up" shifts available during the week (or does this happen and I just missed it?)

8 hours is just a little bit long for me, I find myself fading after about 6, especially on graves.

I'm sure there are good reasons for doing the 8's, just curious if a 4, 6 or "float" has ever been tried and what the results were.

It was great working with everyone, and I'm definitely going to do it again next year.

Hi Y'all. I'm coordinating the rangers for Fuego de los Muertos, San Diego's regional decompression. The appropriate tribute is being rendered unto the BRAF so this is an official BM event and this is a call to all those migratory rangers seeking to practice their art with us.

I've posted the particulars after my sig but here are some other things;

All volunteers must buy a ticket. $35 advance and I believe as much as $55 at the gate.
Advance sales aren't happening yet as the website isn't up. I'm told this will happen w/in the week.
Though it's a three day event we could use whatever time you can spare to ranger : ).
It's a nice place to camp but due to being in a wooded area there won't be all the fire you'd expect at BM.
I had a great time last year.

Contact me off-com if you're interested. Uber Guber, Pullease come : ).

Sas

"In a secret conclave held deep in a bunker in ultra-conservative orange county, a cadre of egomaniacal pseudo-burners got together and planned an artless coup. To deceive the naive do-gooders elsewhere in the Orange County and San Diego areas, these pod people decided to call it "OC/SD Decom"

No, that's not right....

In a glorious burst of radically inclusive experimental community, all the burners in Orange and San Diego counties spontaneously materialized together on a hilltop in unanimous communion, merging into a hive mind of intense agreement. They called this "decom"

No, that's not quite right either...

Announcing Fuego de los Muertos Dos!

Born amidst some confusion but no lack of effort, the second OC / SD Decompression event will take place the weekend of October 21-23 at Outdoor World Retreat (<http://www.outdoorworldretreat.com>www.outdoorworldretreat.com) near Boulevard, CA. We're continuing the theme from last year's very successful event, in honor of Halloween, Samhain, and Dia de los Muertos. As some view Burning Man, it's a time to consider and celebrate fire, death and rebirth: creating art, music, theater, life and love.

This is a weekend camping event in a high desert campground. Gates will open at 4pm Friday, October 21. Tickets will be available later this week, starting at $35 and graduating up to $55 as we approach the event. Stay tuned for an announcement about ticket ordering. We'll have a website up at <http://www.fuegodelosmuertos.org>www.fuegodelosmuertos.org shortly with information about the tickets, location, camps, performers, financial details and all. There's already a yahoo group for planning and discussion at <http://groups.yahoo.com/group/OC-SD-decom.>groups.yahoo.com/group/OC-SD-decom. If you'd like to help in the planning and doing, please join.

This is a participation event. While we all appreciate the great contributions made by musicians and artists, there will be no free tickets. Everyone here is an artist! Some have already volunteered and devoted their time in planning. Many of these have communicated about details or needs for participants, ideas and materials:

Inspector Gadget: Event Organizer
Michael Hennig: Art Director
Zen Coyote: Theme Camp Placement
Marie-Pierre: Greeters
Sasquatch: Rangers

We also have several people involved in the stage production and management, and you'll be hearing from the stage manager very soon with a list of committed performers and a call for more. This year, we'll have one outdoor stage for live performances, plus DJ's, music and dancing in theme camps.
rangers, we raised over $1000 for the sanctuary dome. thank you all so very much for supporting the WOK calendar especially through the crazed internet rumor mill that surrounded this fundraiser. an extra sticky special thank you to those of you that made the calendar possible.......my heart goes out to each of you for helping me make this calendar a reality.

mucho love

We are in dire need of extra support this next year as our event numbers are getting upwards to 1400 citizens....so this next year will be our first time doing a outpost to encompass the land and keep everyone safe, as well as dealing with the struggles of gate crashers and the such (had some weird, danger issues last year so we need sharp eyes).

Dear Friends,

Our best friend is dying, We are sad as hell, and We are asking for your help. Now is the time to show that “community” and “connections” mean a lot more than just bopping around at late-night parties together.

Our friend’s name is Curtis Coleman. He gives a lot to the world, and we desperately need what he gives. He runs the Cult of E.R.I.C. village at Burning Man and a member of the Pagoda of Infinite Reflection this year on the playa. Last year, he was the nation’s most popular elementary school entertainer, reaching tens of thousands of young kids through song to teach them about safety, public spirit, and most importantly, that they have a voice. We need our children to find their voice.

Curtis now has no voice, fighting an aggressive cancer in his throat called squamous cell carcinoma. Soon Curtis will have neck dissection surgery, plus aggressive radiation & chemo. On paper his chances of survival are less than 1 in 4, but cancer victims facing far worse odds have been “miraculously” cured when enough people came together to make it happen. We do amazing things together within our respective families, so please, please participate in saving Curtis’ life and prove we can do amazing things together within our community.

So many of you know Curtis, are stunned by this news, and have already asked how you can help. Some of Curtis’ closest friends have put together a plan of action we hope everyone connected to Curtis in any way will participate in. We need three things immediately for Curtis: money, time, and love.

Money: Curtis has no insurance, and the most promising medical treatments aren’t covered by the county’s last resort coverage. If everyone that sees this gives up a couple lattes and contributes at least $10 or more if you can, we’ll be on our way to giving Curtis the best chance possible at life. Please help as much as you can RIGHT NOW by using Paypal – the long link is after this paragraph. If it doesn’t work go to www.Paypal.com and enter account number friendsofcurtis@yahoo.com. Or, send a check to “Friends of Curtis” at 1142 Garfield Ave, San Jose CA 95125. All donations will go to the Friends of Curtis Foundation.

Paypal link: https://www.paypal.com/xclick/business=friendsofcurtis%40yahoo.com&item_name=Friends+of+Curtis&cn=Note+To+Curtis%3A&tax=0&currency_code=USD&lc=US

Time: Curtis’ girlfriend Andi needs help to cope with the huge burden of caring for Curtis over the months to come. If you can help with time for finding treatments, delivering an anti-cancer diet, transportation, lots of social visits, a mailing list, or even household tasks like mowing the lawn it would be tremendously helpful. Contact FriendsOfCurtis@yahoo.com and you’ll find out that when you reach your hand out to someone that needs it, your hand never comes back empty.

Love: Whether or not you can help with time or money, you can help with love in so many ways. Visualize the tumors melting away into nothing, and a healthy Curtis making hundreds of kids a day laugh and learn again with his unique talent and beautiful voice. Put Curtis in your prayer circles, or your altars, or whatever connects your energy to the universe. Radiation is powerful medicine, but the love force of many can change the world. Help change the world now through one man that has touched so many of us and our children.

Ok, right now, just do it! Send at least $10, figure out how else you can help, and send a prayer. Then please forward this letter to everyone in your tribe and email lists with a personal note about how you are connected to Curtis, and ask them to participate in supporting my lifelong friend. Stand up for what is good in the world by asking everyone you know to help. Check out www.FriendsOfCurtis.com that will be set up soon. And thank you for the love. We are all in this together, and grateful for your help.

I spoke with Kevin briefly on the phone while his Mother held it for him. It was actually only a few words before she took the phone away and spoke with me herself. Because of the traction his arms are strapped down and there are pads over his ears making it difficult for him to talk on the phone. He was miserable, wanting to speak with me and angry that she would not help him. The phone does not reach far enough, she said. She discouraged me and all others from visiting. She said that they are planning to get his computer in there so that he can read emails but I don't know when that will happen. He needs lots of cheering up so send cards, emails, tapes, or whatever seems appropriate. You can imagine how hard it would be to be trapped as he is in his body and powerless in his life. His Mother is there daily for the afternoon and evening. There is no prognosis yet.
